Elizabeth (artgarfunkel-)

Hi, I’m Elizabeth! I live in New York.

The first Simon & Garfunkel song I ever remember hearing was “America.”  It wasn’t this huge moment— you know, not like in the movies. I didn’t have an epiphany of any sort. I just remember thinking, “Hey, this is a great song,” buying ‘Bookends,’ and then going about my business. It wasn’t until months later that I really got into Simon & Garfunkel.

One of the best things about Paul and Art as a duo (at least, for me) is their strange functionality. It’s almost as if they were born to be friends. They were meant to sing together. Their friendship is a brotherhood, it’s natural and organic, it’s pure. Paul and Art never let themselves be forced together by the music industry.

Out of the two of them, I’ve got to say that Artie is my favorite. I couldn’t really tell you why I prefer him over Paul. That’s like trying to explain why I prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla. I love his voice, his personality, his poetry, his face, his acting, his hair. He’s just a beautiful guy and I really admire him. I think that’s all I can say.

Extra Info:

Favorite S&G Album: It’s between “Bookends”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.”

Favorite S&G Song: “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.”, “America”

Alicia (lechatperdu)

Hi, I’m Alicia (though I prefer Leash). I’ve been living in Sydney, Australia for the past 2 years but originate from Wellington, New Zealand.

The melodies of Simon & Garfunkel have been permeating my home for as long as I can remember; my Dad was a Paul Simon fan back in the day, and so I also recall numerous hours spent listening to his album Graceland. It wasn’t until I started playing guitar myself, that the admiration was renewed. Of the duo, I’d have to say I favour Paul Simon’s prowess as a lyrical poet and fingerstyle guitarist.

Emily (stevens-cat)

Hello, I’m Emily. I live in Canada. It’s pretty nice here I guess, but I haven’t been anywhere else to really compare.

If I remember correctly, the first Simon And Garfunkel song I ever heard was ‘Sound Of Silence’. My parents have always listened to ‘older’ music, and that included Simon and Garfunkel. I heard their music before and enjoyed it, but was never particularly interested in the artists until this year.

I bought a ‘Greatest Hits’ album from a record store and played in my car on the way home and instantly fell in love. I don’t know what it was, or why I didn’t feel that way when I heard their voices before, but it was something I can’t fully explain. Art’s voice struck me the most. Of course both he and Paul have beautiful voices, but the clear, purity of Art’s voice in ‘For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her’ was something else. I remember listening to that song on repeat for days. Not only do I admire Art’s musical ability, but his poetic side, and just him in general.

Basically, Simon And Garfunkel will always be one of my favourite dynamic duo’s.

Favorite S&G Album: I really love every one of their albums, but ‘Bookends’ would be #1 on my list.

~ (shawtyandgarfuckel)

Hello I alternately reside in New York City and California. I got into Simon & Garfunkel by accident when I was 17 and found their whole discography in a thrift store. 5 dollars and 5 records later, I developed a substantial interest in these two men. The first song I heard was “You Can Tell The World” and my jaw dropped at how modern it sounded. For the rest of the day I continued to listen to the rest of their work chronoligically, finding quick favorites here and there and when that day was over I couldn’t wait to do it all again.
I can’t pick one over the other

Extra Info:

Favorite S&G Album: “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.”

Favorite S&G Song: A tie between “Cloudy” and “Flowers Never Bend With the Rainfall”

Other music I enjoy: Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Sublime, The Doors, Kimya Dawson, Pink Floyd and Handel

Giulia (caroliknow)

I’m Giulia, an Italian girl who doesn’t remember when she first heard the melody of “The Sound of Silence”: it’s one of those songs I know by heart since the day I was born. What I do remember is the impact “The Boxer” had to my life. The first time I heard those lyrics and Paul’s guitar picking, I instantly fell in love with them and it made me cry for days. I had never felt so understood by a song before. I felt I had to know more about Simon & Garfunkel. My love grew out of control and for months I did nothing but listen to them, watch their videos, find out about their lives. Their music explains my life: from the saddest and darkest moments, to the happier ones, always pervaded by a sweet melancholy.
Years passed and I’ve fallen in love with many other songs and musicians, but this lovely couple keeps moving me to tears.
I don’t really prefer one of them over the other, but I have a soft spot for Artie’s hair.

Extra Info:

Favorite S&G Album: “Bridge Over Troubled Water”

Favorite S&G Song: “The Boxer”, followed by “I am a rock”

Other music I enjoy: The Beatles, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Beach Boys… to name a few.

Samantha (paulsimon-)

Hello I’m Sam and I’m from California.

I don’t think I could remember the first Simon & Garfunkel song I’ve ever heard because I’ve grown up around their music, and I don’t think I’d be exaggerating if I said they’d always been a big part of me. To be honest, I got into Paul Simon’s solo stuff before I began to discover my love for Simon & Garfunkel. Simon & Garfunkel just really get it, you know. They know what it is to feel sad and to feel happy and to feel hope and they really know how to display it in beautiful music, and I think that’s what I appreciate most.

If you couldn’t already tell, Paul is my favorite out of the two of them. It isn’t just those amazing melodies but those lyrics -that poetry- just get me every time. No matter what I’m feeling, or what trouble I’m going through, there’s a Paul Simon song for that. He’s just so genuine. He has such a good sense of humor. Though he once said the word was overused, he’s a genius. Honestly he’s my hero. Plus he’s very cute and all that (don’t get me started on that accent).

Other music I enjoy: The Beatles, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Queen, The Who, Eric Clapton, and a whole lot of jazz and blues and stuff

Mariana (melodysustainin)

Hi, I’m Mariana. I live in California.

I can’t pin down when I first got into Simon & Garfunkel but I have early memories of watching a rerun of The Concert in Central Park during one of my local PBS station’s pledge drives. Then it all started up again the first time I saw “The Graduate.” I was lucky to be able to see them during the “Old Friends” tour in 2004.

But my devotion to S&G and desire to listen to every recorded song and bootleg and search YouTube for obscure clips and online newspaper archives for old articles only began this summer. I’m grateful to this lovely blog for fueling this obsession! I hope I can put it to good use as an admin here.

Their music has the power both to make me indescribably happy and to induce a good cathartic weep. There’s also something about the kismet of their childhood friendship and later partnership that is so incredible.

I love and admire Paul’s songwriting genius so much, but as a person, I love Artie the best. The frightened gazelle.

Extra info:

Favorite S&G Album: “Bookends”

Favorite S&G Songs: This is hard. “Bleecker Street,” “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.,” “The Only Living Boy in New York,” “Old Friends” and “Bookends,” “April Come She Will,” “Keep the Customer Satisfied,” and live versions of “A Most Peculiar Man, ” “Leaves That Are Green,” “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,” and “The Boxer.” And this is not a song, but Artie’s story about photographing the cover of the Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. album before singing “A Poem on the Underground Wall” is my favorite thing ever.

Other music I enjoy: Paul Simon solo stuff, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Beethoven.

Lisa (gasstationsensei)

Hey, I’m Lisa, and I live in Canada.

I started really listening to Simon and Garfunkel a little more than a year ago, but they were always present in my life. Having a last name close to Robinson meant being koo koo kachooed at by everyone with basic knowledge of The Graduate. Their music drifted in and out of my life over time, mostly through the radio, or the reminder that Bridge Over Troubled Water was my grandma’s favourite song.

I can’t pick a favourite. Keith Olsen once said of Buckingham Nicks, “these two voices were meant to sing together.” That’s Paul and Art. They just make sense.

I could not have imagined becoming so connected to them - together, and as individuals - in such a short time. I’m constantly finding new things to love about them: Art’s attraction to his own lips; Paul’s head tosses; the way they hug each other at red carpet events so naturally; Art’s bucket hats. Everyone loves a bucket hat.

Extra info:

Favorite S&G Album: It’s a tie between “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

Favorite S&G Song: last.fm tells me they are “Fakin’ It”, followed by “El Condor Pasa.” I’m going to add “Bleecker Street,” “Why Don’t You Write Me.” and live versions of “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her” from 1969. I’ll stop there or this list will be a hundred times longer than it needs to be.

Other music I enjoy: Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, The Guess Who, Neko Case, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Buffy Sainte-Marie, The Everly Brothers (my first introduction to beautiful harmony), solo Paul (sorry, gazelle), Linda Perhacs, and and and…
